Games for Impact to Brussels: Exploring Gamification for Rural Development
How can games and gamification help create better opportunities for young people and communities in rural and remote regions? This was the central question explored by Creative Crowd and the InnoGS project by Interreg NPA during the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels, Belgium.
As part of the event, the InnoGS team hosted Play Your Part: Roleplay for Rural Development – Shaping Youth Opportunities Together, combining interactive role-play with a panel discussion to explore new approaches to rural development, youth participation and regional innovation.
Using gamification to address real-world challenges
The role-play session invited participants to step into different roles within society and explore the challenges facing young people and rural communities from different perspectives.
By taking on these roles, participants could examine real-world situations, exchange ideas and collaborate on potential solutions. The activity demonstrated how gamification - applying game mechanics and interactive experiences beyond traditional gaming - can encourage active participation, support dialogue and make complex societal challenges easier to explore.
The panel discussion continued these conversations, creating space to share experiences and reflect on how game-based approaches can support more inclusive and collaborative regional development.
The sessions received encouraging responses, with participants actively contributing their perspectives and engaging with the activities.
Games for Impact:
Connecting play with positive change
At Creative Crowd, we explore how games, interactive technologies and gamification can be used beyond entertainment to support learning, collaboration and innovation.
Our participation in Brussels reflects this approach: using Games for Impact to create engaging experiences that help people understand different perspectives, participate in discussions and contribute to solutions for real-world challenges.
These approaches are particularly relevant to rural and remote regions, where creating opportunities for young people, strengthening community engagement and supporting local innovation are important parts of sustainable development.
About InnoGS
InnoGS is a EU project funded by Interreg NPA focused on exploring innovative, game-based approaches to regional development and opportunities in rural and remote communities. Bringing together partners from Sweden, Finland, Ireland and Iceland, the project investigates how games and gamification can support new ways of learning, collaboration and problem-solving.
Through activities, workshops and cross-border cooperation, InnoGS connects people and ideas to explore how game-based methods can help communities respond to local challenges and create new opportunities for the future.
Creative Crowd is proud to contribute its experience in games and interactive experiences to this work.
A big thank you to everyone who joined the sessions in Brussels, shared their perspectives and helped make the discussions meaningful. By bringing people together through play, we can open up new conversations about the future of rural communities.
Sometimes, changing the way we approach a challenge is the first step towards finding a new solution.
