Nordsken: Gaming Culture and Youth Engagement in Skellefteå

Nordsken is Northern Scandinavia's largest nerd festival, held every year in Skellefteå, Sweden. The three-day festival brings together digital gaming, cosplay, LAN parties and creative expression, and is largely organised by young people. Creative Crowd, a games-for-impact consultancy based in Skellefteå, collaborates with Nordsken as part of its work to strengthen gaming culture and youth engagement in northern Sweden.

What happens at Nordsken

Nordsken attracts thousands of visitors each year. Over three days, the festival offers:

  • Digital gaming and LAN parties

  • Cosplay

  • Creative activities and expression

  • Meeting places for people who share an interest in games and pop culture

A festival built by young people

One of Nordsken's distinguishing features is that it is largely organised by young people. Running a festival of this size gives young organisers practical experience in project management, collaboration and event production, and creates a visible meeting place for gaming culture in the region.

Why Creative Crowd supports Nordsken

Creative Crowd works with games as tools for learning, participation and innovation. Supporting Nordsken connects this work with the local community and with young people who are interested in games. Creative Crowd's collaboration with Nordsken is a community partnership, not a funded project.

Part of Skellefteå's games ecosystem

Skellefteå has an active games community that includes game studios, education programmes and events. Nordsken is one of the places where this community meets the public.
