Lighting Up Corners Together: Insights from the Okayama Delegation Visit ✨🌍

Over the past few days, Creative Crowd had the opportunity to take part in an inspiring exchange with visitors from Japan's Okayama Prefecture, including Professor Mitsunobu Kano, Chie Sato, and Shusuke Mimura. The experience offered valuable conversations, new perspectives, and a reminder of something important: Northern Sweden has much more to offer than we sometimes realize.

The visit began at Mötesplats Lycksele, where Region Västerbotten and Okayama signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening innovation and collaboration across borders 🤝🌏

Professor Mitsunobu Kano set the tone with a powerful message about "lighting up corners" - helping every unique talent find the conditions to thrive. His vision of creating a "golden landscape" where people and ideas can flourish resonated throughout the entire visit and became a recurring theme in our conversations.

Beyond the formal program, the delegation experienced the creativity and community that define our region. From a beautiful opera performance by Lycksele's cultural school to discussions on innovation, leadership, and international collaboration, the visit highlighted the importance of connecting people, ideas, and cultures 🎭✨

The journey continued to Skellefteå, where we had the opportunity to showcase several examples of the innovation ecosystem that is growing across Northern Sweden. A particularly memorable stop was Jörn and The Jörniverse 🎮🌲

Seeing the delegation's reaction to the games, the creative environment, and even the Totoro-inspired elements of the space was a reminder that innovation often happens in unexpected places. Initiatives like Jörniverse are not just creative projects—they are part of a larger story about regional transformation, talent attraction, and community building.

In Skellefteå, the delegation also visited the opening of Society Expo 2026, explored Magnus Johansson's Japanese garden, and participated in discussions around education, sustainability, innovation, and the role of games in driving societal change 🚀🌱

One experience stood out in particular: Wasteland. Once contaminated industrial land and now transformed into a public artwork and gathering place, it became a powerful symbol of many of the themes discussed throughout the visit. Transformation, creativity, resilience, and long-term vision all came together in one physical space.

Key Takeaways

Northern Sweden is more innovative than we sometimes realize 💡
Sometimes it takes visitors from outside the region to help us see the strengths we already possess. The delegation consistently highlighted the creativity, collaboration, and willingness to experiment that characterize Västerbotten.

Skellefteå continues to demonstrate what's possible 🏙️
Despite its size, the municipality continues to move quickly, work collaboratively, and pursue ambitious initiatives. The ability to bring together public organizations, businesses, educators, and creative industries remains one of the region's greatest advantages.

The potential for collaboration with Okayama is significant 🌏🤝
Throughout the visit, it became clear that there are many shared values and challenges between our regions—from talent development and innovation to sustainable growth and community building. This partnership is only beginning, and we see exciting opportunities ahead.

At Creative Crowd, we are grateful for the opportunity to participate in these conversations and help showcase the creativity, innovation, and collaborative spirit that exist across Northern Sweden.

As Professor Kano encouraged us: let's continue to light up our corners - together ✨
